Packing Tips

fly-fishing equipmentThe altitude at Hidden Meadow Ranch is 8,550 feet above sea level in a mountainous, mixed-conifer forested area.  For spring, summer and fall visits, plan on cool – even cold – mornings and evenings in the mid-30s to upper-40s (°F).  Daytime temperatures range from the 50s to the 80s (°F), depending on the monsoon season that typically starts in early July and continues through August with afternoon mountain thunderstorms.

Clothing

For fly fishing outings, versatility is important so we recommend dressing in layers.  Bring a brimmed hat, rain gear (just in case), light-weight jacket, sweatshirt or fleece, sunscreen and polarized sunglasses.  Due to our altitude, pack long-sleeved shirts regardless of the season!  If you bring your own boots and waders, you will find that breathable gear will provide the most comfortable fishing experience.  Dinners at the Lodge are casual, so jeans or khakis and a long-sleeved shirt or sweater will be perfect.

Hidden Meadow Ranch will provide all of the top-notch fishing gear you will need for your adventure, including rods, reels, boots and waders, and flies.  Of course, feel free to bring your own equipment – especially if you have a lucky rod!  For stillwaters, we recommend 5- and 6-weight rods with floating or 150-250 grn sinking lines.  For rivers and streams, we suggest 3- and 4-weight rods with floating line.

Fishing License

Please obtain your Arizona fishing license or reservation permit prior to your off-site trip.  White Mountain Apache Reservation licenses will require a stop on your way to the Ranch.  Private water fees and other permits will be coordinated with your guide.
